The Steering Committee

Numerous terms are used to indicate the group of individuals that join together in effort to open a new charter school.  For the purposes of this web resource, the term “steering committee” is used most frequently and is synonymous with “the founding group”.  It is not uncommon for several individuals on the steering committee to transition into the founding board, and eventually, the governing board, of the charter school.  The difference between a steering committee and a founding board are subtle, but there are legal implications (e.g. Open Meeting Laws) that affect boards differently.  Sometimes it is helpful to think of the steering committee as the precursor to the board, before non-profit status is established, or before the charter application is approved and the school becomes a purveyor of public funding.
